Games are the backbone of the party. They set the rhythm: energetic at the start, gradually winding down, finishing right when the party needs to be calm for the cake.

How I choose them

I do not arrive with a fixed script. Before the party I ask three things: how many children, what ages, and where. From that I build a sequence that fits the space and the group, relays make no sense in an apartment, and circle games do not work for thirty children in a large garden.

During the party I read the group. If a game is not landing, I change it. If one is going particularly well, I stretch it. That is the difference between prepared entertainment and a checklist executed regardless.

Format

Relays, cooperative games, dexterity challenges, team problems and circle games for the youngest. I bring all the equipment, hoops, cones, balls, scarves and whatever the programme calls for.

What happens if it rains, or it is too hot?

I always have an indoor version of every game. In the Algarve summer I avoid running games during the hottest hours and switch to shaded challenges built around dexterity and cooperation. The party does not depend on the weather.

Are the games competitive?

There is healthy competition, but the format is built so nobody is left out. I use rotating teams rather than elimination, so no child spends the party sitting down because they lost the first game.

Does it work with a wide age range?

It does, and that is the most common case at family parties. I use games with adjustable rules and mixed teams where older children help the younger ones. It usually turns into one of the best parts of the party.
